Scout was born out of an idea and an opportunity. The idea was simple: use everything we learned from digital badge-earning in Teen Summer Challenge and target a broader and more persistent community. The opportunity came in the form of “risk capital” from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation that would allow us to push our ideas far beyond what the shoestring budget for Teen Summer Challenge allowed.
The key to providing an open and rich experience with Scout was the ways in which participation and activity could be collected. Two years of exploring and extending possibilities in our teen summer badge program gave us the insight to develop activity triggers that would capture a wide arc of experiences, and working with a web-savvy and active base of teen users helped me shape a look and feel for Scout that was accessible to all ages.
Though I worked on a fair amount of code, plugin configuration, and content writing for the project, my largest contribution was in the overall visual design of the project, producing all of the badges, avatars, featured images, layout elements, interface, and responsive design.
